About the collection

What can you expect from our permanent collection at the museum? You’ll discover masterpieces by artists including Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondriaan. Start in the sculpture gallery and then wander through Helene Kröller-Müller’s collection: from old masters to modern art. In the Van Gogh Gallery, you’ll see dozens of Van Gogh paintings, while movements such as De Stijl and Futurism are also featured extensively. Thus, you will gain a clear overview of 19th- and 20th-century art in a single visit.

Start in the sculpture gallery

You will find our collection in the Van de Velde Wing, the original museum building. Here you can view the collection of Helene Kröller-Müller. She sought to present an overview of the development of art in the 19th and 20th centuries. You enter via the sculpture gallery, which features works by Barbara Hepworth, Jacques Lipchitz, Henri Moore, Anish Kapoor and Marino Marini.

Wander through Helene’s collection

Take a walk through the presentation and discover the highlights of Helene’s collection. You’ll see abstract works by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. You’ll also encounter more realistic, neoclassical works by artists such as Jean Metzinger and Charley Toorop. Helene also collected works from the 16th and 17th centuries, including pieces by Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach. As you walk through the permanent collection, you get a sense of the different periods in art history. Just as Helene intended.

The Van Gogh Gallery

Helene was very fond of Vincent van Gogh’s work. She describes him as ‘one of the great spirits of modern art’. That is why the Van Gogh Gallery is located at the heart of the Van de Velde Wing. Here you can always see around 30 to 40 Van Gogh paintings, displayed in a constantly changing selection.

Futurisme and De Stijl

Our permanent collection also features many works from De Stijl, including masterpieces by Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg and Bart van der Leck, among others. There is also a special section dedicated to the Futurist collection. Helene was late in recognising the significance of this art movement and, to her regret, never purchased any works. Directors who succeeded Helene acquired works by artists such as Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni. As a result, Futurist art is now accessible to everyone in the Netherlands. Find out more about Futurism in our YouTube series.
